Magnetic Assemblies Overview
SDM MAGNETICS excel at designing, manufacturing and delivering superior magnet assemblies requiring tight tolerances and complex geometry. We produce our own materials and components and provide solutions to some of the world’s customers.
Magnetic assemblies are tools or systems which use electromagnets, permanent magnets, ceramic magnets, alnico magnets, rare earth magnets or a combination to do specific kinds of lifting, holding or separating of metallic materials. Combinations of different magnets in assemblies can increase the overall magnetic force of the tool. Most magnetic assemblies used in industrial and metal manufacturing use permanent industrial magnets to do various kinds of physical work, including metal parts and sheet metal lifting, mounting and holding, separating and water treatment. Permanent and nonpermanent (electromagnetic) magnet assemblies are used in automotive, aerospace, electronics and biomedical fields in beam control, film and software disk programming and erasing, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), sound speakers, sensors, TV monitors, welding equipment, power meters, ignition timing systems, linear actuators, blood testing and separating, electric motor activation and more. Many types of magnets are specifically used for certain industries and applications. For example, sheet magnets are a flexible ferrite-plastic composite which is extruded into magnetic sheets and used in automotive and consumer industries, and can be cut into magnetic strips of rubber material. Bar magnets are the most common type of magnet used today, and are made from a ferrite metal material.
We offer decades of experience and technology leadership along with the industry’s most extensive investment in engineering and tools to help our partners and customers achieve the most demanding application requirements.
We have the magnet industry’s most extensive knowledge base on material performance at extremes of temperature and understanding of design effects on load line. We excel at technical support to help you select the correct grade of materials, coatings, tolerances and magnetic testing.
One of our core competencies is overcoming the challenges presented by applications for the oil & gas, aerospace and defense markets. Our magnetic assemblies are capable of handling the most challenging environmental conditions where extremes of temperature, precision and reliability are critical.
We work hard to provide the best customer service with expert consulting, short lead times on quotes and quick turnaround on prototypes for new products and programs. We understand your product life cycles and work with you to reduce costs over time.
Select Your Desired Industrial Magnetic Assemblies and Devices Type
High-value magnet assemblies depend on selecting the right magnetic material, components and adhesives. SDM has one of the most extensive permanent magnet material product portfolios in the industry and can satisfy any custom magnet requirement with precision and speed. We work closely with our customers from design to finished product to maximize value and performance.
Design for Manufacture
The strong forces characteristic of permanent magnets make them difficult to handle. Every step is critical to maximizing the value of your assembly, and SDM provides the engineering and production expertise to excel at each point. Our engineering team conducts Finite Element Analysis modeling in-house to ensure designs are optimized.
Safety & Handling
SDM prioritizes the safety concerns inherent in assembling magnet components. We use cutting-edge manufacturing methods to manage high forces and prevent damage to people or magnets. Because SDM produces its own material, we have an intimate understanding of magnetics and magnetic circuit in complex magnet assemblies.
ETO (Engineered-to-Order) Customized Magnetic Assemblies
We specializes in the development and fabrication of application specific magnet assemblies from a variation of an existing product to new product formation. Magnetic Concept Validation is used to determine if a magnet solution is viable. This process involves design exchanges between team members, drawing reviews, first order software simulations, and geometry mock-ups of the assembly. SDM’s magnet products are used in equipment and assemblies across a variety of industries. From high-speed surgical drills to satellites in Earth’s orbit, SDM has a solution for you.
SDM maintains an extensive in-house assembly manufacturing capability and augments certain skill-sets by managing relationships with a variety of key vendors. Our design and development process will take into account the target manufacturing location’s capabilities so as to ensure a simple conversion from prototype to production levels. Through a variety of services and capabilities, SDM works as an extension of the customer to provide first-rate magnet products.
Enhanced Magnetic Strength
Magnetic assemblies typically have higher magnet force when compared to a magnet by itself because the flux conducting elements (steel) of the assembly are often times an integral part of the magnetic circuit. These elements, by the use of magnetic induction, will enhance the assembly’s field and focus it to the region of interest. This technique works best when using the magnetic assembly in direct contact with the work-piece. Even small gaps can dramatically impact the magnetic force. These gaps can be an actual air-gap or any coating or debris which stands the assembly off of the work-piece.
